Lamezia Terme

Lamezia Terme, with 72000 inhabitants, was born as the fusion of 3 towns, Nicastro, Sambiase and S.Eufemia. Sea and mountains are a characteristic of this territory, climate is typically Mediterranean.
Nicastro has Byzantine origins and had grown with Northman and Svevy. Its historical centre, S. Teodoro, is on the top of a hill where you can find ruins of the Nortman-Svevy Castle, is distinguished by small streets and the houses laying one to the other.
To see:
Nineteenth-century Numistrano main street: in the place once used for fairs. Close to it the small Umberto theatre better known as Pidocchietto, once used as the Rosario (Rosary) oratory brotherhood. On the left side of the theatre you can see St. Domenico church and monastery where in 1598 Tommaso Campanella spent some time.
Archaeological Museum: keeping relevant findings coming from Casella of Maida, S. Pietro Lametino, Acconia, Balzano di Maida, S. Eufemia Vetere. Keeping also a copy of “Tesoretto di S. Eufemia” (The little Treasure - end of IV b.C.); you can find the original version at British Museum.
Castle: built before Northman and then grown (end XI sec a.C.). Upper and frontal part are coming from XII sec. Inside it you can find military barracks, army square, and wide water tanks. Since 1595 was a prison and then pretty destroyed by earthquake in 1783.
Cathedral: the existing cathedral was built in 1640. Was changed many times: firstly in ‘800, then in the beginning of previous century. In 1925 rebuilt in neo-classical style. The actual aspect is from mid ‘900.
Museum of diocese: it has many many finds and contributes to document evolution in arts during centuries. Very interesting are ivory casket of XII sec a.C. of Arabic-Sicilian cultural, St. Giovanni and St. Stefano relic arms of XV sec. a.C., a mother-of-pearl casket of XVII sec. a.C. and precious tapestry, a statue of the Virgin made by Domenico Gagini, and S. Francesco d'Assisi paintings made by Mattia Preti, the Assumption made by Carlo Maratta apprentice.
Noble Palaces: Nicotera Palace (distinguished by a wide portal with noble emblem). Sacchi Palace (with the marvellous stucchi of ‘700), Statti Palace, (with baroque decorations), D’Aquino Palace, D’Ippolito Palace, Niccoli Palace.
Public Library: house of the old book, Capuchin monk library and the diocese library.
